Drinking chocolate

German: Trinkschokolade Also known as: Heiße Schokolade, Trinkschokoladenpulver, Schokoladenpulver, Hot Chocolate

Hot drink made from melted chocolate or drinking chocolate powder with milk or water, richer and creamier than plain cocoa.

Drinking chocolate is a beverage in which chocolate, cocoa mass or a chocolate powder is dissolved in hot milk or water. Because of its higher cocoa butter content, it is usually thicker and creamier than a drink made from cocoa powder.

The powder is legally defined: under the German Cocoa Ordinance, drinking chocolate powder or sweetened cocoa powder must contain at least 25% cocoa powder, chocolate powder at least 32%. The drink's history goes back to the cultures of Central America, where cocoa was drunk long before solid chocolate existed.
