Degassing valve

German: Aromaventil Also known as: Entgasungsventil, Einwegventil, Degassing Valve

A one-way valve in coffee packaging that lets carbon dioxide escape from freshly roasted coffee but does not let oxygen in.

Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide over several days. In a tightly sealed bag the gas would build up and inflate the pack. The small valve, usually visible as a round button on the front, opens under excess pressure and then closes again.

This allows coffee to be packed soon after roasting without lying in the open air for long. The valve protects against oxygen getting in but does not retain aroma compounds completely. Once opened, the pack should be resealed well.
