Also known as: Kluntjes, Kandis, Kandiszucker, Ostfriesische Teekultur
A large piece of white or brown rock candy placed in the cup before the tea is poured in East Frisian tea culture.
Kluntje is the East Frisian word for a large piece of rock candy. It goes into the empty cup first, then the hot tea is poured over it, making the sugar crackle audibly. Because the rock candy dissolves only slowly and the tea is not stirred, one kluntje usually lasts for several cups.
Together with the cream (wulkje) and strong East Frisian tea, it forms the well-known tea ritual. East Frisian tea culture was added in 2016 to the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage of the German Commission for UNESCO.
