Fannings

Also known as: Fanning, Teefannings

Fine tea leaf particles obtained when sifting black or green tea and used mainly in tea bags.

Fannings are small, flat leaf particles, much smaller than broken grades but coarser than dust. They arise when sifting orthodox teas or are made deliberately by the CTC method. Labels such as BOPF (Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings) classify them more precisely.

Because of their large surface, fannings release their compounds very quickly and give a strong, dark liquor in a short time. This makes them the typical content of tea bags. They are not necessarily inferior tea, just intended for a different use.
