Grain coffee (coffee substitute)

German: Getreidekaffee (Kaffeeersatz) Also known as: Kaffeeersatz, Malzkaffee, Zichorienkaffee, Muckefuck

Coffee-like drink made from roasted barley, rye, malt or chicory – without coffee beans and caffeine-free.

Coffee substitute is made from roasted cereal grains, malt, chicory roots or other plant parts. It tastes roasty and slightly sweet but contains no caffeine.

In Germany it is known above all from times when bean coffee was scarce or expensive; today it is drunk as a caffeine-free alternative, often as an instant powder.
