Karlsbad coffee maker

German: Karlsbader Kanne Also known as: Karlsbader Kaffeemaschine, Bayreuther Kanne
A traditional porcelain coffee maker in which a porcelain strainer with fine slits replaces the paper filter.
The Karlsbad coffee maker comes from the Bohemian spa town of Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) and has been known since the 19th century. It consists of a pot, a porcelain strainer and a water spreader that distributes the hot water evenly over the ground coffee. The strainer has fine, diagonally arranged slits.
Because no paper holds back oils and fine particles, the coffee tastes fuller than classic filter coffee. A coarse grind is needed so that the grounds do not slip through the slits. The device is flavour-neutral and creates no filter waste.
