Caffeine content of coffee
Share
German: Koffeingehalt von Kaffee Also known as: Koffein, Coffein, Koffeingehalt
The amount of caffeine in the coffee bean and drink, which depends mainly on the coffee species, dose and brewing method.
On average Robusta beans contain considerably more caffeine than Arabica, roughly twice as much. In the drink, what matters most is how much ground coffee is used. A cup of filter coffee usually contains more caffeine than a single espresso, even though the latter is more concentrated. The degree of roast changes the content only slightly.
All figures are guidelines and vary widely. The European Food Safety Authority considers up to about 400 milligrams of caffeine spread over the day safe for healthy adults, and lower amounts for pregnant women.
