Theobromine

German: Theobromin Also known as: Methylxanthin

Bitter-tasting, mildly stimulating constituent of cocoa, chemically related to caffeine but considerably milder in effect.

Theobromine is an alkaloid from the methylxanthine group, which also includes caffeine. It occurs mainly in the cocoa bean and contributes to its slightly bitter taste. Cocoa powder contains considerably more of it than caffeine.

In humans, theobromine has a weaker and slower stimulating effect than caffeine. For dogs, cats and other pets, however, it is toxic because they break it down only very slowly. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are therefore particularly dangerous for animals.
