TGFOP, FTGFOP and SFTGFOP

German: TGFOP, FTGFOP und SFTGFOP Also known as: TGFOP, FTGFOP, SFTGFOP, Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, TGFOP1, FTGFOP1

High leaf grades for whole-leaf black tea with many golden tips, used mainly for Darjeeling and Assam.

TGFOP stands for Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, a whole leaf with plenty of golden tips. FTGFOP adds "finest", SFTGFOP "special finest"; some sources read the S as "super". An appended "1" usually marks the best sieve fraction of a lot.

These abbreviations appear mainly for Darjeeling but also for Assam. They describe leaf appearance and sorting but are not uniformly regulated. The estate, harvest time and one's own tasting say more about freshness, plucking and flavour than the length of the abbreviation.
