Peaberry
Share
German: Peaberry (Perlbohne) Also known as: Perlbohne, Perlkaffee, Caracol
A coffee bean that developed alone rather than in a pair inside the coffee cherry and is therefore round rather than flat.
A coffee cherry normally contains two seeds lying with their flat sides against each other. In a small share of fruits only one seed develops, filling the space alone and taking on a round, oval shape. Such beans occur in both Arabica and Robusta.
Peaberries are often screened out and sold separately. They are frequently said to have a more concentrated flavour; what is established is mainly that their shape lets them roll more evenly in the drum. Peaberry lots from Tanzania, for example, are well known.
