Latte macchiato

German: Latte Macchiato Also known as: Latte, Caffè Latte

A milk drink in a tall glass in which espresso is poured into hot, frothed milk, creating visible layers.

Latte macchiato means roughly stained milk in Italian. Hot milk with plenty of foam goes into the glass first, then the espresso is poured in slowly. Because the liquids differ in density and temperature, layers of milk, coffee and foam form.

The drink contains considerably more milk than a cappuccino and tastes correspondingly mild. Ordering just a latte in Italy usually gets you simply a glass of milk. Plant-based drinks can also be used, but they froth with varying success.
