Bourbon (coffee variety)
Share
German: Bourbon (Kaffeevarietät) Also known as: Bourbon-Kaffee, Red Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon
A classic Arabica variety named after the island of Bourbon (today Réunion), known for a sweet, rounded cup.
The variety developed from plants that French traders brought from Yemen to the island of Bourbon in the Indian Ocean, now called Réunion, in the 18th century. From there it spread mainly to East Africa and Latin America. Besides red Bourbon there are yellow and pink forms.
Bourbon yields more than Typica but is also prone to disease. In the cup it is regarded as sweet, full-bodied and balanced. The variety has nothing to do with the whiskey of the same name.
