German: Mate-Tee Also known as: Yerba Mate, Matetee, Mate
Caffeinated infusion made from the dried leaves of the South American mate plant.
Mate comes from the holly species Ilex paraguariensis and is an everyday drink in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil. Botanically it is not tea but is brewed like tea.
It is traditionally drunk from a hollowed gourd or cup through a metal straw with a filter (bombilla). Mate is also the basis of mate sodas.
