Excelsa
Share
Also known as: Coffea excelsa, Coffea dewevrei
A coffee type once considered a separate species and now usually classified botanically as a variety of Coffea liberica; known for tart, fruity notes.
Excelsa was described in Central Africa at the beginning of the 20th century and was long listed as a separate coffee species. According to current botanical classification it belongs to Coffea liberica. The plants are large, vigorous and relatively resistant to heat and drought.
Excelsa is grown mainly in Southeast Asia, often as a blend component. Its flavour is considered unusual, with tart, fruity, partly dark-berry notes and noticeable acidity. In the trade it is often still sold under its own name.
