Liberica

Also known as: Coffea liberica, Liberica-Kaffee

A coffee species (Coffea liberica) from West and Central Africa with large beans and a strong, often smoky and fruity flavour; only a small share of the world market.

Liberica grows as a large shrub or tree and copes well with heat and low elevations. The cherries and beans are much larger than those of Arabica and Robusta, and the beans are often irregular in shape. Today it is grown mainly in Southeast Asia, for example in the Philippines and Malaysia.

Its flavour is described as strong, woody to smoky and with an idiosyncratic fruitiness. It plays only a minor role on the world market but is attracting attention as a hardy species in a changing climate.
