Coffee belt

German: Kaffeegürtel Also known as: Coffee Belt, Bean Belt, Kaffeeanbaugebiete

The name for the growing zone around the equator between the tropics, where almost all of the world's coffee is grown.

Coffee plants need a frost-free climate with sufficient rain and even temperatures. These conditions are found mainly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, roughly between 23 degrees north and south latitude. Major growing regions are in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Within the belt, elevation, soil and rainfall shape a coffee's character. Arabica prefers higher elevations, while Robusta also grows in hot lowlands. Climate change is increasingly shifting suitable land to higher altitudes.
