Bombilla

Also known as: Bombija, Chimarrão, Tereré, Kalebasse, Cuia
A metal drinking straw with a filter end used to drink mate traditionally from a gourd; also the basis for chimarrão and tereré.
The bombilla is a tube, usually of metal, whose lower end is shaped as a filter. This lets one drink the infusion directly from the vessel filled with loose mate. The vessel, called mate or cuia, is traditionally a hollowed-out gourd.
In southern Brazil the preparation is called chimarrão and is drunk with finely ground, bright green mate; in Paraguay the cold tereré is common. The vessel is often passed around a group and refilled again and again with hot, not boiling water.
