Americano

Also known as: Caffè Americano, Long Black

A coffee drink made from espresso diluted with hot water to a cup of roughly filter-coffee strength.

For an Americano, a single or double espresso is topped up with hot water. This makes it milder and longer than espresso, but it tastes different from filter coffee because the aroma comes from espresso extraction. According to tradition, the name goes back to American soldiers in Italy.

When the water goes into the cup first and the espresso second, it is called a long black, especially in Australia and New Zealand; more crema is preserved this way. Unlike a lungo, the water in an Americano does not run through the coffee grounds.
