ESL milk (extended shelf life)

German: ESL-Milch (länger haltbar) Also known as: Länger haltbare Milch, Extended Shelf Life, Maxi-frisch-Milch

Milk sold chilled that, thanks to stronger heating or filtration, keeps for about three weeks unopened.

ESL stands for extended shelf life. The milk is heated more strongly than traditional fresh milk, for example to 85 to 127 °C, or additionally microfiltered to remove germs. The pack often says longer-lasting.

Unopened and chilled, ESL milk usually keeps for around three weeks, after opening only a few days. In taste it lies between fresh milk and UHT milk. Because it is sold in the chiller cabinet and may be marketed as fresh, it is easily confused with traditionally produced fresh milk.
