Lapsang Souchong

Also known as: Rauchtee, Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, Souchong, Smoked Tea

A Chinese black tea from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian that is dried over pinewood fires and therefore tastes strongly smoky.

Lapsang Souchong originally comes from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian province and is regarded as one of the oldest black teas. For the well-known variant, the leaves are exposed to pinewood smoke during withering and drying. This produces the intense smoky aroma reminiscent of campfire or smoked foods.

Intensity ranges from subtle to very strong. There are also unsmoked teas from the region sold as Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong. Lapsang Souchong is drunk plain, used in blends and employed in cooking as a smoky flavour.
